Global Handwashing Day

  • Submitted by: Alasdair Allan, Na h-Eileanan an Iar, Scottish National Party.
  • Date lodged: Tuesday, 22 September 2020
  • Motion reference: S5M-22791

That the Parliament welcomes 15 October 2020 as Global Handwashing Day; notes that this is particularly important in 2020 as hand hygiene is vital in preventing the spread of COVID-19; understands that an estimated three billion people globally do not have access to handwashing facilities at home, 900 million do not have access to handwashing at school, and 43% of healthcare facilities globally do not have handwashing facilities at the point of care; acknowledges that hygiene is one of the most cost-effective public health interventions globally; commends the work of WaterAid in this area, and particularly welcomes its work supported by Scotland’s International Development Fund and Scottish Water staff to provide improved access to water, sanitation and hygiene in schools and healthcare facilities in Rwanda and Malawi; considers that Scotland’s international development fund has a significant impact on the lives of thousands of people in partner countries, and believes that this is an important signal of the Scottish Parliament’s support for international aid and development.
