Protection of Scottish Parliament Powers - Amendment

  • Submitted by: Willie Rennie, North East Fife, Scottish Liberal Democrats.
  • Date lodged: Monday, 02 October 2023
  • Motion reference: S6M-10703.2
  • Current status: Taken in the Chamber on Tuesday, 03 October 2023

As an amendment to motion S6M-10703 in the name of Jamie Hepburn (Protection of Scottish Parliament Powers), leave out from “agrees” to end and insert “regrets that households, businesses and public services are caught between UK and Scottish governments that are each incapable of working in partnership; believes that powers of the Scottish Parliament have been frequently undermined by successive Scottish National Party administrations; notes that an example of this was seen after the passing of S5M-13945 on 19 September 2018, which called for national testing of P1 pupils to be halted, immediately after which the Scottish Government announced that it would ignore the will of the democratically-elected Scottish Parliament and has required these tests to continue ever since; considers that the repeated use of incorrect statistics within the Scottish Parliament Chamber without correcting the record when these statistics are found to be false, is detrimental to the public’s trust in politicians and the Scottish Parliament itself; believes that the releasing of substantial embargoed information through the media rather than the proper parliamentary channels is disrespectful to the Parliament, and calls on the Scottish Government, when carrying out its duties, to do so in a manner that does not undermine the powers of the Scottish Parliament on a regular basis."
